architecture :: it's just an illusion

This Australian Customs Service building, located in Melbourne, Australia was designed to demonstrate the Cafe Wall Illusion. Believe it or not each floor is not only level but exactly the same height, yet the tesselation pattern of black and white rectangles separated by  orange dividing lines makes it look anything but. The Cafe Wall Illusion originated in 1979 in a cafe in Bristol England. Oddly enough when the dividing lines are black, the illusion is greatly diminished, hence the architects went with the orange lines.

Sure, looking at it will definitely drive you batty but isn't it JUST COOL?
