Canopied in primrose and meadowsweet, Highgate's terraced graves rise up alongside winding paths to an avenue of catacombs escavated out of the hillsides's sheerest slope. An iron gateway is flanked by obelisks and surmounted by an immense Prolemaic arch that opens into a narrow lane of stone shelved mausoleums. Brambles and creeping jenny enclose and climb down between the thick metal doors imparting an ominous mood to the cemeteries eerie grandeur. from house & garden April 1987
